That’s my research budget for four years

That was the comment allergedly made by Dr. Dominic Dormont, Rock Hudson’s physician in Paris, on being told the cost of Hudson’s chartered flight from Paris to LA.

In case you were wondering, the cost was 25 million francs ($300,000) in 1985 money.

This is something I’d been thinking about ever since I stopped work to concentrate on art full-time, then decided it’s not quite feasible for me.

Hudson of course was a star, who worked really hard, even while he was ill.

But how about artists? Art material, travel, rental of studio and flat for residency, rental of gallery space for exhibition, framing and display of art work, classes, all add up.

Not all artists sell every piece of their works.

How on earth do full time artists fund their work?
